📰 Justice Senyo Dzamefe Opposes Extension of Retirement Age for Judges

During the ongoing vetting of Supreme Court judge nominees, Justice Senyo Dzamefe has expressed strong opposition to proposals suggesting an extension of the retirement age for Supreme Court and Appeals Court judges from 70 to 75 years.

“I don’t agree that the retirement age should be extended to 75,” he stated during his appearance before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee. His stance has sparked debate within the legal and political space, especially as conversations about judicial reforms continue to gain traction in Ghana.

Justice Dzamefe emphasized the need to provide opportunities for younger, equally competent legal minds to rise within the judiciary. His comments reflect a broader concern about succession, efficiency, and the dynamism needed at the highest levels of the judiciary.

The vetting process continues, with attention now turned toward how this view may influence broader reform discussions going forward.
