Motorcyclist Collides Head-On with Vehicle at Pokuase Interchange: Police Investigate One-Way Violation

Accra, Ghana – May 9, 2025

A serious road accident occurred on the evening of May 8, 2025, at approximately 7:58 p.m., at the Pokuase Interchange, involving a motorcyclist and a white Chevrolet Spark. The crash happened when the motorbike, reportedly traveling at high speed, entered a one-way section of the road in the wrong direction, heading directly into oncoming traffic.

According to eyewitnesses and the driver of the Chevrolet Spark, the vehicle was heading from Accra towards Odumase Junction when the motorcyclist suddenly appeared, facing oncoming vehicles in a reckless manner.

“Before I could even process what was happening, he was right in front of me,” the visibly shaken driver told authorities. “He was riding directly into my lane with speed—I had no time to react.”

The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Ridge Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Both the motorcycle and the vehicle have since been impounded at the Pokuase Police Station as investigations continue.

A Growing Concern: One-Way Violations by Motorcyclists

This incident highlights a growing concern among road users and law enforcement: the dangerous and illegal practice of motorcyclists using one-way roads in the wrong direction. Such actions not only violate traffic regulations but also pose significant threats to both riders and unsuspecting drivers.

The Ghana Police Service has repeatedly cautioned motorcycle riders about observing road signs, lane discipline, and the rules of road usage. Riding against traffic, especially on high-speed roads or interchanges like Pokuase, can have fatal consequences.

A Call for Responsibility

Motorcycle riders are reminded that while motorcycles offer flexibility in navigating traffic, that advantage does not excuse breaking traffic laws. The road is a shared space, and safety depends on every user respecting the rules.

Authorities urge all riders to:

Avoid using one-way roads in the wrong direction. Wear helmets at all times. Maintain moderate speeds, especially in urban areas. Stay alert and respect other road users.

The Pokuase Police are expected to release a preliminary report once investigations are complete. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to report reckless driving and traffic violations to help prevent further accidents on Ghana’s roads.
