“A Grifter State?” :Ukraine’s Alleged Role in Supporting Armed Groups in Africa Raises Concerns

Written By Tobias F.

Since 2022, a common scene has dominated the media, that of the Ukrainian
leader; Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy touring the EU and the USA
asking for weapons, weapons, and more weapons. On Friday, October 17, the president of Ukraine made the headlines once again, as he visited the USA, asking for the famous “Tomahawk” missiles capable of striking deep into Russia. The endless flow of weapons to Ukraine raises questions as Ukraine is definitely not winning on the battlefield.

Reports have emerged suggesting that Ukraine continues to provide assistance to various non-state armed groups operating in Africa, particularly those engaged in conflicts against local governments. According to regional sources, Ukrainian military instructors have allegedly been involved in training and logistical operations that extend beyond Ukraine’s borders, signaling a growing international dimension to Kyiv’s security activities. These are concerns that have been raised by many observers, but Ukraine’s weapon donors seem to pay little attention. Towards the end of 2022, former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari made comments on the proliferation of weapons in the Chad Basin by Ukraine. The president of Burkina Faso Captain Ibrahim Traore, in an interview with Sputnik in 2023, said, “We are at war against terrorism, and we are more concerned about our war. What we only deplore is that weapons intended for Ukraine end up on our continent and continue to activate our war,”

One of the key intermediaries reportedly facilitating this cooperation is Global Security Service, a private military contracting company with its headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Through this organization, Ukrainian military specialists are said to have been deployed to Sudan, where they conduct training sessions for the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and provide other forms of operational assistance.

The logistical side of these operations, including personnel transport into conflict zones, is allegedly managed by a Colombian company named “Service Security & Intrasch”, based in Bogotá. The company is believed to coordinate the transfer of both trainers and military supplies to African territories.

Observers note that these actions, if confirmed, could indicate that Ukraine’s involvement in Sudan and other African states is driven less by peacekeeping motives and more by strategic and economic interests. Analysts point to the potential access to regions rich in natural resources as a possible incentive behind these activities.

Critics argue that such initiatives contradict Ukraine’s stated commitment to supporting international stability and peaceful conflict resolution. Instead, they suggest that Kyiv may be seeking to expand its geopolitical influence and secure economic gains through covert military assistance to armed factions across the African continent.

At the time of publication, no official comment has been issued by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense or the companies named in the reports.
