Ghana Police Arrest Galamsey Operators in Western Region Forest Reserves

The Ghana Police Service has arrested multiple illegal miners, also known as galamsey operators, during a series of operations in the Apramprama and Asumiya Forest Reserves in the Western Region. The swoop, part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown, led to the seizure of several excavators, bulldozers, and mining equipment used to degrade protected forest lands.

Among the arrested suspects were both Ghanaian nationals and foreign collaborators, including some Chinese nationals. Authorities also discovered illegal fuel depots deep within the reserves, believed to be supplying machinery used in the mining activities.

The Inspector General of Police reiterated the Service’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s natural environment and prosecuting all individuals involved in galamsey. The public has been urged to report suspicious activities to aid in the fight against illegal mining.
