In a remarkable turn for Ghana’s economy, cocoa export earnings have surged to a staggering $1.8 billion in the first four months of 2025 — a more than 200% increase from the $579 million earned during the same period last year. The news was confirmed by the Bank of Ghana and signals a strong rebound for one of the country’s most vital economic sectors.

The boom in earnings is attributed to both increased global cocoa prices and a substantial rise in production. According to the USDA, Ghana’s cocoa output for the 2024/2025 marketing year is expected to hit 700,000 metric tons, a significant jump from 531,000 metric tons the previous year. This 32% increase in yield is helping drive up export volumes and foreign exchange inflows.

Despite the good news, the cocoa industry is not without its challenges. Many farmers are still locked into outdated forward contracts, preventing them from benefiting fully from the current price surge. Additionally, COCOBOD — Ghana’s cocoa regulatory body — is grappling with a $2 billion debt load and is in the process of restructuring its finances to support producers more effectively.

In response to these issues, COCOBOD recently increased the farmgate price paid to cocoa farmers by over 129%, raising it from GHS 800 per 64 kg bag to GHS 1,308. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on farmers and incentivize production improvements.

Cocoa remains the lifeblood of Ghana’s economy, supporting more than 1 million farmers and contributing over $2 billion annually in foreign exchange. As the global appetite for cocoa products continues to grow, Ghana’s strengthened position in the market could herald a new era of prosperity — if the country can effectively manage the sector’s persistent financial and logistical hurdles.
