Pregnant BECE Candidate Delivers Baby During Exam at Mamponteng Centre

A pregnant student sitting for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) stunned school authorities and WAEC officials when she went into labour during the Information Technology paper on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

The incident occurred at the Asenua Presbyterian Junior High School Examination Centre in Mamponteng, located in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the student had stepped out to use the washroom during the paper. A policewoman assigned to the centre, sensing something was wrong, followed her — only to find the student in active labour.

“She was quickly moved to the headmaster’s office, and within moments, she delivered her baby right there,” said Desmond Adjei, a teacher at the centre who spoke to the media.

The swift intervention of the community proved crucial. The pastor of the Asenua Presbyterian Church, who was nearby, used his private car to transport the student and her newborn to the Victory Hospital in Mampongten. Both mother and baby are reported to be in stable condition and are receiving medical attention.

The student’s courage and determination to write the exams despite her condition have earned her widespread admiration. What began as a routine exam day has become a story of resilience, community support, and unexpected joy.
