Hon. Haruna Iddrisu Signs MOUs for Construction of Two Public Universities in Jasikan and Kintampo

Accra, Ghana – July 15, 2025 — In a bold move aimed at expanding access to higher education in Ghana, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with international partners GEICO and CMS Group for the construction of two public universities in Jasikan (Oti Region) and Kintampo (Bono East Region).

The initiative is expected to significantly boost educational infrastructure in underserved regions, offering new opportunities for thousands of Ghanaian students seeking tertiary education closer to home.

At the official signing ceremony held in Accra, Hon. Iddrisu emphasized the importance of decentralizing education and investing in regional development. “These two universities are not just buildings; they are symbols of hope and progress. Jasikan and Kintampo deserve the same access to quality public education as Accra or Kumasi,” he stated.

The MOUs outline collaborative commitments between the Government of Ghana and its development partners, GEICO and CMS Group, covering areas such as infrastructure development, technical consultancy, project financing, and timelines for completion.

The Jasikan Public University will focus on teacher education, environmental science, and rural development, while the Kintampo institution will be geared toward health sciences, agriculture, and applied technologies. Both universities are expected to include modern lecture halls, digital libraries, hostels, and research facilities.

Speaking at the event, representatives from GEICO and CMS Group expressed their excitement at contributing to Ghana’s educational growth. “We are proud to be part of this transformative initiative. Education is the foundation of national development, and we look forward to building institutions that will serve generations,” said a GEICO spokesperson.

The announcement has drawn praise from various stakeholders, including students, chiefs, and opinion leaders in the beneficiary regions. Many view the development as a game-changer for local economies and youth empowerment.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, subject to parliamentary approval and environmental assessments.

As Ghana continues to grapple with increasing demand for higher education, these two new universities are seen as a strategic investment in the country’s human capital and long-term development.
